High-street cabinets use "filler strips" to hide gaps. I build to your walls and requirements. You get up to 15% more storage because the cabinet actually fits your home’s unique geometry.
This window casement is engineered from solid Sapele, chosen for its natural rot resistance and stability. I use traditional scribed profiles and mechanical joints to ensure that whether it’s a kitchen frame or a window casement, it’s built to move with the seasons, not against them.
Showroom kitchens and fitted furniture is designed and built to be replaced every 8 years. My work is engineered to be a permanent part of your home. Buy it once, use it for a lifetime.
I’m Chris; an independent joiner, born and raised in mid-Kent. I started Local Bear Joinery to provide a grounded alternative to mass-produced furniture. I don't have a sales team or a showroom. When you book a consultation, you're speaking to the person who will be working with you every step of the way, from initial design and selecting the timber, to cutting every joint, applying every finish and installing your furniture in your home. My goal is simple: build joinery that outlasts the mortgage, fits your home's unique quirks perfectly, and brings you joy for as long as you live there.
"Is this more expensive than a high-street showroom?"
Not necessarily! You aren't paying for a salesperson's commission or a flashy showroom. You are investing in real wood like Oak or Ash, and high-quality materials like Scandinavian Redwood, Finsa and Birch plywood that won't peel or warp. My pricing is transparent and reflects the technical precision of a handmade fit. For my work you will pay once - unlike the major retailers, there are no hidden fees for fitting or fake discounts to make a kitchen, wardrobe or library seem like a bargain.
"How long does a project take?"
Because I handle every joint, scribe, and brush stroke personally, I focus on one project at a time. Lead times vary, but I'll discuss specific dates with you early on so you can plan your home and life around the installation.
"Do you only do kitchens and alcoves?"
I specialise in integrated cabinetry, but my logic applies to any architectural joinery—from libraries and media walls to complex freestanding furniture, down to custom doors or curved skirting boards. If it requires precision, care and "buy once" quality, then you have come to the right place.
"What area do you cover?"
I am based in mid-Kent, but like my namesake, I range far and wide. If you are in the South East, you are in my patch.
The First Call - A 10 minute call between you and me to discuss your requirements, the scope of the project, and establish a realistic budget: no pressure, no sales pitch.
The Creative Visit - I visit your home to solve the unique quirks of the geometry. We discuss inspiration, review mood boards, and create initial sketches together to define the aesthetic.
Technical Specification - If you choose to move forward, I produce detailed technical drawings and measurements. This is a billable phase (set against the final balance), providing you with a fixed-price spec and drawings that are yours to keep.
The Bench-led Build - I personally select the timber and cut every joint in my mid-Kent workshop. You’ll receive weekly updates via a private Google Drive link containing progress photos, and you’re welcome to organise a visit to the workshop to see your project taking shape.
Install & Handover - Once the furniture is scribed perfectly to your walls, the project is complete. You receive a digital archive of the build and a handover document covering maintenance and your guarantee.
I am an independent joiner and work directly with my clients from the first sketch to the final install, ensuring a single point of accountability for every joint, scribe and brush stroke. By trading the high-street showroom for a focused workshop, I can prioritise true craftsmanship and honest materials over sales fluff. If you value a straightforward process and joinery built to outlast the mortgage, we’ll work well together.
How I Build for Your Home.
All furniture is basically a box or series of boxes, but they aren't made equally. Most retailers use vinyl-wrapped chipboard that peels within a year. I use solid wood and high-quality materials that hold a screw indefinitely and resist moisture.
I use hardwood like Oak, Ash, Walnut or Tulip for face frames and high-traffic edges. It creates a "permanent" piece of architecture that ages gracefully rather than wearing out.
I spec hinges and runners rated for decades of use. If it moves, it should feel substantial, stay silent, and never sag.
